This weekend, dramatic events took place in Haiti and Afghanistan. Caritas Luxembourg has been working for more than 15 years in Haiti and for 20 years in Afghanistan, despite all the difficulties.

Saturday's earthquake plunged Haiti once again into an even more dramatic situation. As of Sunday evening, more than 1,200 people had died and 7,000 had been injured. Experts estimate that these figures will increase significantly as the hours go by. People are desperate and have spent the night outside. Caritas Luxembourg has been working with its partners on the ground since the big earthquake in 2010 and is supporting emergency relief efforts. Thousands of homeless people require tents, plastic sheeting, food, clothes, hygiene kits, and drinking water. Overnight, Caritas Luxembourg released funds so that essential items could be distributed as quickly as possible on the ground.

In Afghanistan, Caritas Luxembourg has been working for many years in small hospitals in the mountains. The security and humanitarian situation in Afghanistan has taken a dramatic turn with recent events. Hundreds of thousands of displaced people who had sought protection in Kabul are now sleeping in the parks of the capital.

Caritas Luxembourg is calling for more humanitarian aid to be delivered right now. The poor economic situation in the country, compounded by the pandemic, means that 60% of Afghans are already living below the poverty line and are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

A few weeks ago, Caritas Luxembourg doctor Godehard Engels was able to revisit all Caritas Luxembourg-supported hospitals in Afghanistan and make arrangements in case of a Taliban takeover. "However, the speed with which the Taliban took over the country surprised us all. For the time being, the hospitals are continuing their activities," says Godehard Engels. Caritas Luxembourg wants to continue helping people in need. We can't leave the patients and local staff in Afghanistan alone.
