Caritas Luxembourg gets involved in Moldova

Sunday 27 February 2022

Since this morning, a Caritas Luxembourg member of staff has been at the Moldovan border in Chisinau to coordinate Caritas Luxembourg's aid on the spot.

His first reaction was one of astonishment: The line of Ukrainian cars probably coming from the Odessa region is endless. Many refugees are also arriving on foot, by bus or by train and are being taken care of by our local partner, Caritas Moldova, which continues to distribute basic necessities. It is estimated that 50,000 refugees have already crossed the Moldovan border. It is not yet known how many of these refugees will remain at the Moldovan border and how many are only in transit.

A meeting was held this morning with Caritas Moldova and other partners. The aim of the meeting was to define the most urgent needs for the next days, weeks and months. Already, in addition to basic necessities (food, water, heating, hygiene items, baby nappies, etc.), there is a need for psycho-social and medical support. An appeal will also be launched in the next few days to the local population to welcome the refugee families in their homes. Currently, makeshift beds are being organised in public halls.
