Emergency: Mali needs help
Tuesday 6 July 2021
Almost half of the population lives in extreme poverty. Almost one million people are now in need of urgent food aid.
There are many reasons for this poverty, including the political instability and recurrent conflicts that plague the country and affect its economy. But Mali is also suffering the devastating effects of climate change, which threatens agriculture and crops. It is one of the countries in the world most exposed to the consequences of climate change: recurrent droughts, floods and erosion are making the soil less and less fertile. Crop failure is becoming more frequent. Small-scale farmers, already poorly equipped, generate less income and find it difficult to feed their families.
IN THE SOUTH OF MALI AND WEST OF THE CAPITAL, CARITAS LUXEMBOURG IS HELPING LOCAL PEOPLE TO COPE WITH ALL THESE DIFFICULTIES, IN PARTICULAR BY SHARING WITH PRODUCERS MORE EFFICIENT BUT ALSO MORE SUSTAINABLE FARMING TECHNIQUES.
Soumaïla Tounkara, who was one of the first to be trained, says that thanks to Caritas Luxembourg, they have learned a lot about soil restoration and conservation. Soumaïla was also trained in the production and use of organic manure in maize fields.
As rainfall is increasingly unpredictable and the amount of rainfall can vary greatly from year to year, traditional crops are becoming less suitable and less productive. Producers are also encouraged to form cooperatives, in order to work more professionally, share skills and network with other market players.
Finally, farmers are encouraged to diversify their crops. In addition to maize, they now grow sesame and groundnuts. This allows for crop rotation on the land, which helps to restore soil fertility on the one hand, while at the same time providing security if one of the crops fails to produce any results.
ALL OF THESE ACTIONS COMBINED MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO IMPROVE THE DAILY LIFE OF THE POPULATION.
On the one hand, they suffer less from hunger, and on the other hand, by selling the surplus of their production on the market, their income also increases, which contributes for example to the education of children. You too can help improve the lives of farmers in Mali.
