Help on its way to cover Haiti major needs

Friday 20 August 2021

In Haiti, the damages are considerable. According to the latest figures we received, nearly 60,000 houses have been destroyed, 36,000 families are living in improvised shelters and 77,000 houses have been damaged. Some 650,000 people are affected. In addition, 400 schools, 35 health facilities, and many hospitals were damaged or destroyed.  Many surgical wards are out of order. The population lacks everything. On top of that, there is a heavy toll on human life.

The urgent needs are considerable: tents, tarpaulins, food, water, hygiene kits, sanitary kits, flashlights, boots, power banks, clothes and blankets, first aid material (medicines and first aid kits), but also medical staff, rescuers, foster homes and land for temporary shelters.

The challenges are also countless.  Access to the down south of the country from the capital by road is complicated. Many roads and infrastructures are damaged. Local supply is limited. Cyclones and tropical depressions follow one another. The rise of Covid-19 remains a threat. Many children and women find themselves homeless, vulnerable, without security, and exposed to all kinds of exploitation.

Help is on its way. The Caritas response is based on four axes:

  • Securing Food and Water
  • Providing Shelters
  • Building Sanitation For Hygiene Purposes
  • Preventing Covid-19
