Caritas Forum: Joining forces to end child poverty

Friday 24 May 2024

The second Caritas Forum, organised by Caritas Luxembourg on 22 and 23 May, focused on ‘Kanneraarmut: (k)een Thema? Some 190 people came to the inaugural public session on 22 May to hear Prof. Dr Butterwegge's presentation on children and inequality and Dr Anne-Catherine Guio's on the challenges of child poverty in Luxembourg.

The following day, 150 representatives from all the sectors concerned by the issue of child poverty (social sector, children's sector, education sector, medical sector, legal sector, etc.) took part in the day-long symposium at which around twenty experts spoke. In three workshops, the participants drew up proposals which they then presented in plenary session in the presence of the Prime Minister, Luc Frieden, and the Minister for the Family, Solidarity, Living Together and Reception, Max Hahn.

There are many proposals and they will be brought together in a report to be published in September, which will bring together all the conclusions of the symposium. What we can already say is that child poverty is a major challenge for Luxembourg and that our future depends on our ability to meet this challenge. We need to do everything we can. There is a real determination on the part of all the sectors concerned to work together. There is a great many ideas to support, so that the many children living in precarious conditions in Luxembourg today can look forward to a better future.

Finally, Caritas Luxembourg would like to thank all those who participated in any way in the success of this second Caritas Forum. Thank you very much!
