Decarbonise now! - Housing

On 7 June at 12:00 to 14:00

In partnership with the CarbonNerds from the LIST, the Ministry for Consumer Protection, the Ministry of International Cooperation, Greenpeace and Infogreen we ought to bring you local short and long term solutions and actions to decarbonise in Luxembourg. There are 5 events to discuss sectors with high carbon emissions - energy, mobility, housing, food and consumption goods.

Housing

Housing is a critical sector for Luxembourg, not only due to the high prices and accessibility issues, but also to the pressure it has on the environment. The size of houses is larger than the European average, and Luxembourg tops all other countries in share of fossil fuels used for space heating (mostly fuel oil and fossil gas). The consumption of domestic heat is therefore a significant contributor to overall greenhouse gas emissions. What plans can we design to reduce GHG emissions from housing? What compromises will need to be made, if any?

This talk aims at exploring the environmental impacts of our home, both due to the infrastructures and due to their daily use, and how we can reduce them by individual actions.

The presented information will be based on scientific data gathered by researchers of the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST). The latter particularly investigated the carbon footprint of Luxembourg residents and potential decarbonization pathways. While the impacts of housing on climate change will be primarily discussed; other effects, e.g., on ecosystem or resource depletion, will also be highlighted when relevant.
