Opening of « The Revival – Ghana : la décharge de la fast fashion » exhibition

Wednesday 21 February 2024

On Wednesday 21 February, Plaidons Responsable by Caritas.lu, with the support of the City of Esch-sur-Alzette, opened the temporary exhibition on the work of the Ghanaian NGO, "The Revival". The Revival highlights the impact of over-consumption of fashion in Ghana and shows creative and accessible solutions for a sustainable and socially just future.

Through photos, a short film and a study carried out by Caritas Luxembourg, an immersive exhibition has been designed to understand the link between textile waste in Ghana and clothing consumption in Luxembourg. The exhibition was created with the circular economy in mind. Luxembourg residents are big consumers: we buy a lot and, as a result, we throw away more than 12 kg of clothes per person per year. Caritas Luxembourg also offers a programme of activities such as Repair Cafés, workshops and swaps to promote local solutions for a sustainable future. For the City of Esch-sur-Alzette, this is an important theme and initiative in its commitment to sustainable development and to consumption that is better reflected in the various gestures made in everyday life.

THE CONTEXT IN GHANA

Ghana has become a global dumping ground for fast fashion. The country is home to the Kantamanto market in Accra (the capital), with 30,000 retailers, and is one of the largest second-hand markets in the world. Every day, 160 tonnes of clothes are brought to the market in the hope of being resold, but almost 40% of imports are unsaleable because of their poor quality. With no facilities to process this waste, Ghana is drowning in tonnes of clothing from Western countries and Asia, causing environmental damage and impoverishing the local population. As a result, Ghanaians find themselves having to deal with a problem for which they are not responsible.

THE REVIVAL IN LUXEMBOURG

The Ghanaian NGO has taken up the challenge of transforming the fashion industry in order to find solutions to the current situation in Ghana and around the world. Founders Yayra and Kwamena not only play a key role in their community in Ghana, but also exert an influence on an international scale through information and education work in the most consumer countries. After an initial collaboration between The Revival and Caritas Luxembourg in 2022 through an exhibition at Lët'z Refashion, this partnership is being renewed thanks to the support of the City of Esch-sur-Alzette for a new large-format, immersive exhibition focusing on skills sharing through regular workshops.
