Turkey and Syria - They have lost everything!

Wednesday 15 February 2023

On Monday 6th February, two successive earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria. The human toll is very high. More than 40,000 people have been killed so far.
Those who were lucky enough to escape are unfortunately not saved. They have lost relatives, their homes are destroyed or uninhabitable. They have nothing left. And the winter temperatures make the situation even worse.
Caritas Luxembourg knows the disaster area particularly well as it has been active there for many years, particularly in supporting refugees and displaced people from the conflict in Syria. On the very day of the disaster, we supported our partners on the spot in the distribution of basic necessities, but also in the rescue searches
which led to the discovery of many victims under the rubble.
Today, one of our staff members is on site to coordinate the aid to be given to the victims. In the immediate future, the victims need drinking water, medicines, food, clothes, but also tents, mattresses, blankets and heating. Many are sleeping in tents made of simple tarpaulins, despite the cold weather, because they have nowhere else to go.
