Following a request for proposals at the end of 2020 from the City of Differdange and its Social Office, the streetwork project proposed by Caritas Luxembourg around the Gerlache Park and in the city center was selected as the most suitable for the needs of the town.

The experimental project

This streetwork experimental project, which was launched in May 2021, is designed to reinforce social cohesion with preventive measures and civic engagement. It is addressed to young people in social drift who frequent the park to satisfy their addictions but also to visitors of the park, residents and shopkeepers in the vicinity to involve them in a joint search for sustainable solutions to improve mutual respect between users of the park.

The challenges

• To propose, in collaboration with the youth, leisure, sports, cultural and educational activities that correspond to them and prevent them from drifting socially. 

• To listen to them to identify their needs and implement solutions.

• To listen also to the inhabitants, visitors, and shopkeepers to help them to regain access to the park and its surroundings and to organize common activities to promote a better social cohesion of all the stakeholders.

• Responding to homelessness and precarious situations and accompanying people in distress (in complementarity with the existing social services).

Networking

A real network has been set up with the town's services to provide the best possible care of the needs identified by the street workers. There is regular interaction between the Jugendtreff Déifferdeng, the youth department of the municipality, the Social Office, the social grocery store, along with more occasional contacts with the grand-ducal police, the municipal agents and other communal services. A constant dialogue is proposed to the inhabitants and the local business community.
