Latest news on Caritas Luxembourg's action in Moldova

Friday 1 April 2022

Since the beginning of the war, Caritas Luxembourg has been in Moldova to help people fleeing the war in Ukraine.

This help takes many forms, from providing supplies at the border to buying SIM cards, mattresses, sheets, blankets, washing machines and fridges for the shelters. Caritas Luxembourg has also set up a community centre in Chisinau with Caritas Moldova to receive the most vulnerable people. People are welcomed for the night, meals are served and psychological support is offered to traumatised people.

Recently, Caritas Luxembourg's work in Moldova has undergone new developments due to the fact that a large majority of Ukrainian refugees in Moldova want to stay in the country until they can return home.

As a result, Caritas Luxembourg is now helping those hosted in the community centres it supports to find a longer-term housing solution. A host family scheme has been set up and a project to restore 150 homes that have been unoccupied for some time has just been launched. Through these two schemes, some 200 families will be housed.

Finally, Caritas Luxembourg is also currently helping to rehabilitate a second community centre in Balti. Caritas Luxembourg has taken charge of the installation of a community kitchen allowing families to prepare their own meals, as well as the renovation of the playground for the many children hosted. The maintenance work is done by the refugees themselves who receive financial compensation for their work ("cash for work").

It must be said that Moldova is a very poor country. There is a large mobilization to welcome the refugees, but the means are limited. The help of organisations like Caritas Luxembourg is therefore essential.

Caritas Luxembourg thanks all the people, companies, foundations, associations, parishes, institutions and municipalities for their very generous support. Without this support, Caritas Luxembourg could not help in Moldova.

Thank you!
