Youth engagement recognized, valued and encouraged
Monday 27 May 2019
On Saturday 25 May 2019, Young Caritas Luxembourg welcomed the President of the Fondation Mérite Jeunesse, His Royal Highness Prince Guillaume, to its premises.
This visit followed the recent awarding of the 2018 Youth Merit Award, in which Young Caritas participated with the YOUrovelo project. Despite not winning the prize, the project caught the attention of the Fondation Mérite Jeunesse and the wider public.
YOUrovelo is a summer youth exchange organised by Young Caritas in the form of a bicycle tour of Luxembourg. Thus, from 13 to 21 August 2018, 32 young people between the ages of 15 and 26 took part in this bike tour, which involved discovering the country but also getting to know each other better and forging new links. Among the young people, there were eight refugees from the centres run by Caritas Luxembourg, eight young people from Georgia, eight others from South Tirol and eight Luxembourg young people, a cultural mix that turned out to be very rich in exchanges. In all, the young people travelled more than 190km, shared twenty meals, stopped in 30 villages and engaged in a varied social, cultural and political programme.
In this context, HRH Prince Guillaume personally met with the young people who participated in the project and listened to their impressions of and memories from this extraordinary learning experience. Prince Guillaume then encouraged the young people to continue to engage in intercultural exchange, before awarding the participants with a certificate of recognition for their commitment - another moment that they will not forget so soon!
