Day nurseries

Caritas Luxembourg day nurseries welcome hundreds and hundreds of children.

In 2017, these service centres underwent some changes, including the establishment of a general action concept (“Concept d’action general”) based on the national framework ("Bildungsrahmenplan"). The latter is intended to guarantee a high level of quality in all public and private day nurseries that benefit from the childcare service voucher system (système des chèques-services). For Caritas Luxembourg, integrating the "Bildungsrahmenplan" national framework was made easier by the fact that 80% of the quality criteria required by the framework already applied to its day nurseries and day centres. In fact, Caritas Luxembourg did not wait for the "Bildungsrahmenplan" to implement high quality criteria in all its centres.

The authorities expressed a favourable opinion of the general action concept of Caritas Luxembourg centres. The recurring theme of the general action concept is to encourage autonomy by all means, which does not mean that children can do what they want, but that their opinion is taken into account.

To do this, Caritas Luxembourg bases its approach on two educational concepts: the concept of the "Weltatelier", and that of Emmi Pikler.

In 2017, multilingualism was also implemented in all the centres. Each centre was adapted in specific ways to suit the children that it welcomed. Hence, Luxembourgish is favoured in the day centres in Luxembourg City and in the south of the country, where many children are from foreign countries. In other day nurseries, where the majority of children are Luxembourgian, French is favoured instead.

As well as multilingualism, Caritas Luxembourg pays special attention to issues relating to diversity and social inclusion, as well as the transition from one group to another, from the day nursery to the transition house, from the transition house to the youth club, etc. Caritas Luxembourg develops new ideas and innovations in these areas.
